After the cancellation of the presidential election in November 2024 and the early resignation of President Klaus Iohannis, Romania eventually elected a new head of state, Nicusor Dan, who defeated a right-wing challenger. However, nationalism remained strong. At the same time, Romania is struggling to curb a surging budget deficit, reform its military and restore judicial independence. A rare note of celebration was the inauguration of the world’s tallest Orthodox cathedral.
